The Model Home
2007 -
Growing up in the suburbs, I learned at an early age that things are not always as they seem. Constructed facades of happiness that hid unsettling truths, small and large, surrounded me. The idealism put upon suburbia by some people who build and live there is sharply contrasted by its reality.
I employ model homes as symbols for the pretense of perfection that exists in suburbia. My interest is in the underlying tension that exists between these idealistic blank slates and the unknown futures they hold.
Representing an idyllic expectation, model homes are part of a homebuyer’s blueprint to a better life. Many prospects lie ahead for a new homeowner, uncharted and untold.
The Model Home is recognition of the darker possibilities.
